New Regulation from IMO The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted an amendment to Chapter V of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS), which introduces new mandatory position reporting obligations for SOLAS ships. It is called Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) LRIT requires vessels to automatically transmit identity and position with date/time at 6-hour intervals. LRIT equipment must also be able to respond to requests from LRIT data centers, for immediate position reports, and be able to change the time interval from 6-hour intervals, to a frequency of every 15 minutes.
Implementation Date Vessel types required to comply by December 31st 2008 or first radio survey thereafter Passenger ships, including high-speed craft Cargo ships, including high-speed craft, of 300 gross tonnage and upwards Mobile offshore drilling units.
Requirements The ship operator has to provide ship borne equipment which complies with the LRIT regulation Every terminal allocated for LRIT must undergo a LRIT Conformance Testing (LRIT-CT) All ship borne LRIT equipment must be tested and certified by a Recognized Testing ASP or an Authorized Testing ASP appointed by your Flag Test Certificates for LRIT terminals will be required for radio surveys and inspection after 31 December 2008.
